WHO maintains covid-19 as an international health emergency

The director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, considers that covid-19 is currently in a transitory stage; Therefore, its evolution must be monitored to take measures to minimize any negative effect.

World Health Organization (WHO) issued a report on Monday, January 30, in which it recommends that the pandemic caused by covid-19 continue to be a public health emergency of international concern.

The report was prepared by the Emergency Committee of the International Health Regulations (RSI – 2005), after meeting for the fourteenth time on Friday, January 27.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the WHO, agreed with the verdict of the WHO Committee and considers that covid-19 is at a “transition point”. In this sense, he stated that he has the technical expertise in the organization to be able to minimize any negative aspect that occurs.

Similarly, the WHO Committee warns of the need for countries to implement long-term sanitary measures and recommended that alternative strategies be developed jointly to maintain attention and vigilance to the virus once the emergency ends.

The Committee also recommended the World Health Organization to monitor the behavior of covid-19 and, if necessary, integrate it into the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System.

Despite the fact that this disease officially continues with its status as a serious threat to international public health since January 31, 2020, the world does not take into account most of the biosecurity measures associated with the control of the pandemic.

The latest case is that of China, which in December 2022 lifted measures that it strictly applied for three years, in particular confinements and practically total closure of borders. After a violent uptick in deaths and hospitalizations, the pandemic also appears to be in steady decline in this country.
