SIP considers that the arrest of the head of El Nacional is an attack on journalists

The Inter-American Press Association highlighted that José Gregorio Meza, editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Nacional, along with other communicators have been harassed by security forces under orders from Nicolás Maduro.

After the arrest of the editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Nacional, the Inter-American Press Association (SIP) issued a statement condemning the incident and considering it an attack on journalists in Venezuela. He stressed that this type of act also enacts censorship in the country.

The IAPA highlighted that José Gregorio Meza, along with other communicators, have been harassed by the security forces under orders from Nicolás Maduro, “in apparent retaliation for published reports that make the regime uncomfortable,” it detailed in a statement.

Meza was arrested at his home by officials from the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps (Cicpc), who took him into custody so that he could testify before a prosecutor from the Venezuelan Public Ministry (MP) for “some work that was published in El Nacional.”

For its part, the Public Ministry also issued summons against Miguel Henrique Otero, editor-in-chief of the newspaper, and five other employees of the media, including the manager of the Human Resources department.

According to Infobae, this intimidation occurred in response to the investigation that the outlet had published in early January in which it pointed to the brothers Santiago José and Ricardo José Morón as alleged front men for “Nicolasito” Maduro Guerra, son of Nicolás Maduro. .

The president of the Inter-American Press Association, Michael Greenspon, and his counterpart from the institution’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Carlos Jornet, jointly condemned the recent actions, stressing that “there is no doubt that the regime politician seeks to silence any expression that is contrary to their interests or issues”.
