CTV demands sincere dialogue and advocates for a minimum wage based on indicators

The CTV issued a statement in which it stressed that social dialogue with the government and businessmen is the only way to improve the working and living conditions of the working class in the country.

The Confederation of Venezuelan Workers (CTV) issued, this Sunday, January 19, a statement regarding the social dialogue meetings that will take place from January 30 to February 2 of this year, with the aim of reviewing compliance of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry of the International Labor Organization.

These recommendations were made to the government in September 2019, in this sense the CTV reported that not even 10% of them have been met. He also indicated that since March 2022 and with the assistance of the International Labor Organization (ILO) a schedule has been established to comply with these recommendations.

The statement denounces that the dialogue meeting would be the third to take place since March 2022 and ensures that the results of the previous ones have been insufficient, since in none of the issues addressed has “there been a real will of the Venezuelan government to advance on an agreed agenda , to improve the living conditions of the working class”.

In this sense, the CTV highlights that social dialogue with the government and businessmen is the only way to improve the working and living conditions of the working class in the country. It indicates that “our participation in the social dialogue roundtables is carried out under the premise that we cannot abandon any space to fight for workers’ rights. Our mission is to negotiate not only collective contracts but also to agree with the State and employers on labor policies”.

salary increase on the table

In reference to the possibility of an increase in the minimum wage that the tripartite social dialogue table has generated, the CTV highlights that they will raise several requests, among which the following stand out: the amount of the minimum wage based on economic and labor indicators.

“The discussion of the amount of the minimum wage cannot ignore the complex humanitarian crisis, high inflation and the drop in Venezuelan GDP by more than 70% between 2013 and 2020. This context makes the tripartite agreement even more necessary to start a path of economic recovery with social protection”.

The statement indicates that the recovery of the minimum wage requires evaluating its amount and evolution in quarterly periods. “For this reason, it is essential that a tripartite technical commission be installed that meets periodically to evaluate the evolution of the minimum wage and economic and social indicators.”
