MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban visual artist Alejandra Glez will perform her performance “Volver a nacer” at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid, Spain. The presentation will be on February 15 at 6:00 p.m., as part of the “Vision and Presence” cycle that gives visibility to creative women.
Alejandra Glez, whose work is fundamentally focused on feminism, said from her account on Instagram: “Being able to have this opportunity to exhibit in an institution as renowned as this one makes me realize that every effort has not been in vain.”
In addition, she thanked the museum and the Tara for Women Foundation “for supporting her and doing such a great job of helping women grow.”
About this performance, the Thyssen Museum explains on its website: “Based on traditions from her native Cuba, in ‘Volver a nacer’ Alejandra Glez mixes influences from the Yoruba religion and that of the Cuban Tainos from the Antilles to create an action that she talks about the oceans, the sea and water as a creator of life, and that connects the women who accompany her in a new birth full of sorority and healing from the traumatic experience”.
In her creation, which encompasses painting, sculpture, installations, photography and video projections, she addresses issues related to her roots, Cuba’s African heritage, female identity, exile, among others.
As you have defined your own artist, “If I had to put an adjective to her work it would be feminist, because what she tries to do is promote the voice of women, equalize it and make people aware that something must be changed.”
Speaking to the magazine Vogue Alejandra Glez explained: “I have given the opportunity to other women who have suffered violence or psychological pressure to express themselves through my work and, in one way or another, I was also inside their stories.”
According to the contemporary art portal Informed Art, the young woman “questions the macho models with whom she grew up; just as she tries to feed the flow of the universal process that aims to normalize nudism as a peaceful exercise in self-liberation ”.
