National Assembly receives visit from the UN Commissioner for Human Rights

The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, received the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, at the Federal Legislative Palace, the seat of the Venezuelan National Assembly, who arrived in the country on Thursday.

“In the framework of the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, we reiterate our position for constructive dialogue under the respect and protection of the human rights of our people,” the president posted on his Twitter account. of the Venezuelan parliament, Jorge Rodríguez.

Renewal of the memorandum of understanding

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, was also received by the Executive Vice President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, where the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding that the country has maintained since 2019 was signed this Friday, with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner (UN) for Human Rights (DDHH).

It corresponded to the Minister for Foreign Relations, Yván Gil; representing Venezuela, while the UN was represented by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who is in the country to fulfill a work agenda.

This memorandum was signed, for the first time, in 2019; and since 2020 it has been renewed between both parties.

The letter establishes that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has officials in Venezuela to support public institutions in the country with technical assistance.

The Minister for Foreign Relations, Yván Gil, also held a working meeting this Friday with the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (DDHH), Volker Türk, who is in Venezuela to fulfill a work agenda.

Through his account on the social network Twitter, the Venezuelan foreign minister pointed out that during the meeting – held in Casa Amarilla – Venezuela’s progress in this matter was reviewed.

“In a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, invited by President Nicolás Maduro, we reviewed the Bolivarian Government’s progress, and we conveyed the need to lift the illegal sanctions that cause so much damage to the rights of the people,” he wrote. the Venezuelan diplomat on the social network.

He also made reference to a message published on the twitter network by Fundalatin, in which he refers to a report in which it is recorded that 504 patients with chronic diseases have been affected by the impossibility of accessing the supplies and medicines necessary for their due treatment, due to the sanctions and economic restrictions caused by the blockade applied by the Government of the United States (USA).

“Unfortunately, 52 children in need of transplants have died due to the confiscation of CITGO”, refers part of the Fundalatin publication in the aforementioned network.

Türk will hold talks with government authorities, representatives of civil society, human rights defenders, representatives of victims’ groups, heads of UN agencies, funds and programs and diplomats, his office in Geneva reported.

This is the second visit of a High Commissioner for Human Rights (HR) to the Bolivarian Republic, after the one made in 2019 by Michelle Bachelet, and responds to an invitation from President Nicolás Maduro.

The visit of the UN official, which will last until January 28, will be carried out in execution of the existing mechanisms for constructive dialogue, cooperation and technical assistance between Venezuela and the Office under his charge, highlights a note sent by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
