The study is about the Association of HLA class II alleles with susceptibility to develop immune-mediated diseases in Paraguayan patients. The work was published in the International Journal Immunogenetics.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of HLA class II genes with the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic sclerosis (SSc) in the Paraguayan population.
For this purpose, the research included 254 patients with IMID (immune-mediated inflammatory diseases) and as a control group, 50 healthy Paraguayan subjects were included.
all patients they were older than 18 years of both sexes, with Paraguayan ancestryfrom the Department of Rheumatology of the Hospital de Clínicas of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción (UNA), between 2015 and 2017.

The human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are proteins that help the body’s immune system differentiate between its own cells and harmful foreign substances. These antigens are produced from the instructions of inherited genes.
In this study, for the first time the association of the alleles of the genes of the HLA class II region as susceptibility factors to develop an IMID (SLE, AR and SSc) in the Paraguayan population.
This is the First genetic association study in Paraguayan patients with IMIDs. In the analysis carried out, the associations of certain HLA class II alleles and the already known IMIDs have been replicated. However, other new associations not previously described with these pathologies have also been identified.
This study contributes to the existing knowledge about the alterations that may exist in relation to the Genetics in Latin American patients with this type of disease.
