Only 22% of the homes affected by Ian in Pinar del Río have been repaired

MADRID, Spain.- Four months after the He passed of Hurricane Ian on the Island, only 22.3 percent of the homes affected in Pinar del Río have been repaired; For this reason, the Cuban authorities continue without providing a solution to almost 80 percent of the affected families.

As stated on Thursday by the Cuban News Agency (ACN), Government projections for this situation in Pinar del Río extend to a period of five years.

According to the information, partial collapses and people in vulnerable situations are a priority.

The municipalities furthest behind in recovery are San Juan y Martínez, San Luis, Pinar del Río, Consolación del Sur and Viñales, said Andrés Martín Carmona, provincial director of Housing.

San Juan y Martínez barely exceeds 8 percent of the houses rebuilt to date, of the more than 10,800 that were damaged by Ian.

Among the causes for so many delays are difficulties in the organizational process and the distribution of materials; as stated by the manager.

For his part, the director of the Civil Maintenance and Construction Company, Yalexis León Armas, said that “the solution of 60% of the agreed plan for housing in Pinar del Río will depend on the local production of construction materials.” For this production, it is intended to “assemble an industrial sieve with a production capacity of 100 cubic meters per day for the contribution of granite, gravel and stone”; although he did not specify when.

Despite this situation, which affects not only Pinar del Río, the Cuban regime has not stopped announcing restorations to hotels and buildings of tourist facilities, for which there is no shortage of materials nor “there are difficulties in the organizational process”.

While on the Island they continue to build luxurious hotels, the housing fund is increasingly precarious. Cuban cities lose houses and buildings due to lack of maintenance and families, who could never afford those hotels, lose their homes.
