The suspension of operations antapaccayas a consequence of the attacks on its facilities by a group of violent protesters, has caused Cusco to lose S/10 million since January 21, the company reported.
This amount is calculated because the region ceases to receive more than S/2.5 million per day from canons and mining royalties.
“The economic impacts go further, since the province of Espinar (where the company operates) and its districts are no longer receiving S/540,000 per day as a municipal budget due to this suspension,” the company said.
The senior economist of the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE), Fernando González, considered that production of S/14 million a day is being stopped, taking into account that the price of copper today is quoted at US$4 a pound.
“Antapaccay represents around 60% of the copper production in Cusco. It is important for that region, and at the national level it is one of the medium-large mines with considerable relevance”, he assured.
The impact on employment also has to be considered. The IPE analyst indicated that the mine has around 4,000 direct workers and 36,000 indirect and induced workers who are the first to be affected and who are linked to the transportation, services, maintenance, etc.
