Political prisoner Lázaro Rivas turns 42, it is the third time he has spent this date in jail

The political prisoner Lazaro Rivas Perez from Juigalpa, Chontales, is celebrating 42 years of life this Wednesday, January 25, three of which have been spent in the prisons of the dictatorships of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. His brother, the released prisoner and political refugee in the United States, Ulises Rivas Pérez, demands his freedom and hopes to be reunited with his relative safe and sound.

In March 2022, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures in favor of Lázaro Rivas Pérez, who was sentenced to seven years in prison. The agency considers that the political prisoner “is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Nicaragua.”

«It is the third birthday deprived of liberty, like the Rivas Pérez brothers, exiled in the United States, we continue from here giving him strength so that he can continue that fight and can get out of there (jail) safe and sound. May he be spiritually strengthened in God and not lose faith or hope that one day those doors will open and that he will be able to meet and meet us again,” said Ulises Rivas Pérez from the United States in communication by telephone with Article 66.

“We love and love him very much and that today we embrace him in that jail where he is, where they have deprived him of his freedom, where they have locked up his body, but his mind and heart continue with that conviction of justice and freedom,” he added.

Rivas has been incarcerated since July 29, 2020 in the Juigalpa Penitentiary Center, Chontales, for the alleged crime of aggravated robbery. The political prisoner suffers from serious problems with blood pressure and low back pain.

On his Facebook account, Ulises Rivas wished him a happy birthday and asked God to protect him from all evil in the prisons of the Nicaraguan dictatorship. “God shower many blessings. Birthday number three in jail without any crime. I only ask God to take care of you and protect you from all evil, “wrote the released political prisoner.
