The fire in Cerro del Torowhich began this Wednesday and affected more than 200 hectares, is kept “in control”and the authorities work to cool “smoky spots” on the side that faces the Piriápolis spa, confirmed to The Observer the national director of Firefighters, Ricardo Riaño.
At 8 in the morning this Thursday, Riaño explained that the task of the firefighters in the area is centered on the “south” slope, where the fire it continues “descending very slowly”, although “without affecting farms or anything”.
This affected area is “impenetrable” due to its vegetation, so the fire continues to be controlled with “cooling tasks” through the launch of water from helicopters.
The southern slope is the one that houses the complexes and campsites that had to be evacuated because of the fire in the early hours of Wednesday. These places remain vacated because “latent foci continue”Riaño explained. “It is not good to house them in these conditions”, added.
The director stressed that the situation on the north slope of Cerro del Toro it is already “practically liquidated”.
From the Fire Department, the main hypothesis is that the fire started by “human factors”, detailed the national director this Wednesday. However, so far they don’t know “exactly” what started the fire, and neither is “no theory ruled out”clarified the hierarch.
was not affected no house or facilityeither injured people were reported for the incident.
