Anatel authorizes 5G activation in 78 medium-sized municipalities

Anatel releases 5G in seven more capitals starting this Monday

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) granted licensing authorization and activation of 5G technology stations, in the 3.5 GHz band, to 78 municipalities located close to capitals or cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants that already have the technology. The decision taken by the Monitoring Group for the Implementation of Solutions for Interference Problems in the 3,625 to 3,700 MHz band (Gaispi) will come into effect as of this Wednesday (25).Anatel authorizes 5G activation in 78 medium-sized municipalities

According to Anatel, the measure covers municipalities where the 3.5 GHz Band Management Entity (EAF) started the migration of reception of the open and free television signal through satellite dishes in the satellite C band to the Ku band, in addition to scheduling has already begun for the installation of receiver kits for the low-income population, among other measures to vacate the lane that will be used for the new service.

The offer of the service is optional for telecommunication operators that hold concessions and they are the ones who must request activation from Anatel. This is because the obligation to establish 5G technology in these locations still expires in 2025.

So far, 140 municipalities have been released by Gaispi for use of the 3.5 GHz band by 5G stations. As a result, 38.5% of the population has the potential to benefit, according to service provider activations. The agency’s forecast is that by the end of this semester another 160 cities will be released to activate the 5G signal.

Anatel warns that whoever receives open TV transmissions through the satellite dish needs to adapt the equipment to avoid possible interference. Subscribers to the Federal Government’s Single Register for Social Programs (CadÚnico) who receive a free-to-air satellite TV signal can request a free kit to adapt the equipment from Siga Antenado, the trade name of the EAF.

The 78 municipalities contemplated with the possibility of anticipating 5G are located in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Pará, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.
