Santiago Peña traveled to the United States on Monday where he foresees meetings with North American political authorities, a dissertation at Georgetown University in Washington DC and a meeting with the delegation of Paraguayans residing in that country.
Hugo Estigarribia, former national senator for the ANR, affirmed that Peña seeks with this tour to counteract any type of animosity that the US government might have against his candidacy. This, taking into account that on July 22, the US government designated it as “significantly corrupt”.
“The first was to accept the invitation of the ambassador of the United States and the second this tour. This can be generated by having graduated from American universities. It is a signal that he wants to give to the Paraguayan electorate that there will be no questioning by the United States, towards his candidacy, ”he explained.

Víctor Raúl Benítez, a political analyst, expressed in turn that this tour by Peña will not be with relevant authorities from the United States.

However, he warned that this meta message will end up being a boomerang. In the sense that by trying to show that he can go to the United States, he is showing that other members of his team, such as José Ortiz and Horacio Cartes, cannot.

Mario Paz Castaing, political analyst and senatorial candidate for Patria Querida (list 8, option 5), affirmed that this tour is not related to the declaration of the United States last year.
“That does not affect Peña. He is empowered to make those visits regardless of whether it has an impact. “This is what candidates traditionally do, they seek support for an eventual candidacy in the presidential elections,” he concluded.
