Vichada: Ombudsman urges restoration of the rights of indigenous people who look for food in garbage

The Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo Assis, warned about the serious situation in which indigenous communities find themselves looking for food inside the El Merey landfill in the city of Puerto Carreño (Vichada).

The official pointed out that an intervention by regional and national authorities is urgent, in addition to private companies that allow them to seek alternatives that improve living conditions and solve the problem they face. the Sikuani and Amorúa peoples and hundreds of Venezuelan migrants.

“We need to improve living conditions, dignify the work that you carry out on a daily basis, which is the work that gives them the sustenance to take care of their children and the entire family environment,” said Carlos Camargo.

The defender’s statement came at the end of his visit to the landfill, to look for alternatives that improve living conditions and solve the situation of irregular recycling in that region of the country.

In the meeting with the indigenous communities that took place in the sanitary landfill facilities, Camargo Assis assured that “It is urgent to find mechanisms to restore all the rights of communities, including the right to health.”

It was also known that the conditions in which the indigenous communities find themselves are very precarious, among them boys, girls and adolescents, that are dedicated to recycling tasks putting health and life at risk.

“We need to improve living conditions, dignify the work that you carry out on a daily basis, that It is the work that gives them the sustenance to take care of their children and the whole family environment”, Carlos Camargo pointed out.

Because of this, the Ombudsman filed a formal request with the Secretary of Health of the department of Vichada so that, together with the San Juan de Dios hospital, urgently carry out a health brigade for medical care in the communities located near the landfill.

In that same sense, the official asked that the cases in which malnutrition occurs among the indigenous population be verified, taking into account that according to the indigenous governor Henny Arlede Gutierrez, children are “thirsty and without water to drink, hungry and only waste in poor condition, all this in the midst of nauseating smells”.

“It is necessary to organize a route directly with the indigenous communities that allows us to work around the consolidation of a recycling cooperative. The Ombudsman will continue to monitor this problem that affects the Sikuani and Amorúa indigenous communities, and migrants”, concluded Camargo Assis.
