UN asks Police for proportionality after intervention in San Marcos

The mission in Peru of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (Oacnudh) requested proportionality from the country’s authorities, after the Police evacuated the where several of the protesters who arrived in the capital from their regions were camping.

“Faced with the intervention in the UNMSM, OHCHR calls on the authorities to ensure the legality and proportionality of the intervention and guarantees of due process (…) As is public knowledge, various delegations that traveled from different regions (including peasant organizations and indigenous) to participate in the protests in Lima have been staying overnight at the university for the past few days”read a statement from the agency.

INTERVENTION

This morning, the entered the campus of the University of San Marcos with a tank and detained more than 200 people from Puno, Arequipa and Cuzco, among other parts of the country, who had been camping since Wednesday in the university city, located in Cercado de Lima.

After the agents entered, police officers in riot gear gathered at the gates of the campus to cordon off the area. The operation included a police helicopter. Almost two hours later, the detainees, some handcuffed, were removed from the place in PNP buses.
