The former mayor of Puerto Varas, Álvaro Berger, was sentenced by the court to a sentence of five years of imprisonment in its minimum degree for the crime of fraud against the Treasury while he headed the municipality of the commune of the Los Lagos region.
Specifically, the Socialist Party militant was found guilty after a trip he made in 2015 to Bariloche, Argentina, to “strengthen ties.” In that place, the established itinerary was not followed and the expense of money was not justified.

At the expense of the Municipality of Puerto Varas, said trip exceeded $5 million and it was Berger himself who traveled to trans-Andean lands with three councilors, seven municipal officials and a woman who, at that time, was his partner.
However, despite being found guilty and subsequently sentenced, the exedil will not go to jail. This, since he will serve his sentence under the intensive probation system, also paying 50% of the amount defrauded in 10 installments.
