They ask for transparency with the southern gas pipeline

The Executive, through the Multisectoral Commission in charge of renegotiating the proposes that the construction of the new gas pipeline to massify gas, based on the use of the assets of the old concession, begin in mid-2023.

Pedro Gamio, former Vice Minister of Energy, described it as a mistake to insist on continuing a work whose assets are not owned by the State and which have a great controversy of a criminal nature.

“It is not known with certainty when the fate of these assets will be defined and the that today is a priority”.

For Felipe Cantuarias, president of the Peruvian Hydrocarbons Society (SPH), the priority of taking natural gas to the south, which is where the deposit of Camisea and, for it to materialize, an investment in pipeline infrastructure is needed because it is the cheapest and most efficient way to transport gas.

But nevertheless, The report has not included a proposal on how to manage the issue of the gas pipeline in terms of whether the original route will be maintained or there will be ramifications.

“We urge the Government to make the information public and to have a public debate inviting all the actors: professional associations, universities, the private sector and specialists,” he said.

SOLUTIONS

Gamio proposes to extend the gas pipeline that exists in Ica and that has the necessary capacity to supply the southern Peruvian market. Likewise, to lay a gas pipeline no larger than twenty inches, financed with the resources of the Cusco canon, so that they can have natural gas and a branch extends through that area.

“Both solutions are cheaper and more viable than continuing with the project that is in criminal proceedings,” he added.

Regarding the latter, Cantuarias pointed out that there is still no certainty of the legal complexity of the pipelines they want to use.

“Furthermore, although the government spends several million soles a year to maintain these pipelines, we don’t know if they are in good condition,” added the expert.

Gamio assured that the authorities know the legal situation of the concession and the country needs important and real decisions.

For the former deputy minister, if we do not accelerate the mass use of natural gas, to benefit homes, transport and its use in industry, we are exposing the national and family economy to what is happening today in Europe, North America and Asia, which have a strong impact on energy costs both in transport and in the electricity market.

“Peru has how to defend itself and we are lacking firm steps and lucid decisions in this regard,” he noted.

Data

-Gamio estimates that the price of oil derivatives will be increasingly expensive, with the risk that it could reach US$100 a barrel and affect the family basket.

-He also noted that we should take advantage of having natural gas, but also think about the non-conventional renewable energy market.
