MIAMI, United States. — Young people of different ages and social backgrounds assured CubaNet who rule out the possibility of having children in Cuba due to the lack of opportunities they would have on the Island.
The difficult economic situation was another of the factors that the interviewees argued. In this sense, many would like their children to have access to the security and comforts of societies that are more developed than the Cuban one.
“Here it is a bit difficult to ensure the life of another person,” a young woman mentioned to this newspaper.
Others made reference to the poor wages earned by professionals working on the Island, a problem that has afflicted Cubans for several decades.
“The situation is very complicated, prices are very high,” said another of the young people who addressed the issue.
“I want him to see new things,” expressed one of the interviewees in reference to the few conditions on the Island to start a family project.
Data from international organizations confirm that Cuba is one of the oldest countries in Latin America. The demographic picture it is even more complicated for 2050. It is expected that, by then, more than 3.7 million Cubans will be over 60 years of age, according to a United Nations projection.
The debacle of the island’s health system could also affect the drop in the birth rate. Recently, the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported on the death of eight newborns in the first fortnight of January. The deaths occurred at the Diez de Octubre Gynecobstetric Hospital in Havana.
