The American Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Water for People (WFP) decided to “voluntarily” dissolve its operations in Nicaragua that it had maintained for 12 years with drinking water and sanitation projects for the communities.
According to its publication in La Gaceta on January 19, the Ministry of the Interior (Migob) reported that the closure of the NGO was due to the “decrease in funds from its budget, requesting on November 25, 2022 to the General Directorate of Registration and Control of non-profit organizations through their legal representative in Nicaragua Liza Esther Rivera Torres the closing of operations and cancellations of the registration and of the perpetual number assigned”.

WFP had been operating in the Central American country since 2011 and worked closely with the most vulnerable communities with the aim of expanding water services and facilities to achieve the sixth United Nations sustainable development goal: availability of clean water and sanitation and Comprehensive monitoring of freshwater facilities for the progression of human health.
The NGO’s data reflects that during the last 10 years they developed drinking water projects that benefited more than 34,640 families and helped 17,000 to improve their sanitary conditions.
Its main objective focuses on developing countries including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, India, Rwanda, Uganda and Malawi. Reaching 4 million people worldwide.
WFP relies on international contributions and the support of local governments to “create a more effective plan for a given community and run the project together.” A situation that did not occur in Nicaragua under a regime that has dedicated itself to persecuting non-profit organizations.
This January 18, the Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, reported the first meeting of the year that her administration held with almost 300 NGOs that it still allows to operate. “These NGOs work in our country in a responsible, respectful and supportive manner, contributing to the good life of families and communities,” said the wife of the dictator Daniel Ortega.
The Nicaraguan regime currently exceeds 3,000 NGOs dissolved after the popular protests that broke out in April 2018, which left at least 355 dead according to the IACHR, although Nicaraguan organizations raise the figure to 684 and the Ortega government recognizes 200.
