“Elections” of popular power: another farce of Castro’s trade unionism

Elecciones, sindicatos, Cuba díaz-canel elecciones asamblea poder popular presidente economía

Havana Cuba. — The Cuban rulers are artificers in resorting to formalism to the detriment of essences. A reliable example of this can be found in the Popular Power elections. The official propaganda insists that these are the most democratic and transparent elections in the world, when in reality we know that nothing changes with this electoral imitation. What does it matter if Juan or Pedro are elected at the constituency level, when the Castroite hierarchy remains unscathed at the top.

And in that chapter of putting appearances before substance, we cannot fail to mention the supposed power of workers in Cuban society. It is said, among other figurations, that they are the owners of the means of production. For this reason, in Article 20 of the Constitution of the Republic, drawn up by the leadership of power and approved after an undemocratic mechanism that prevented access to the media for those who opposed that document, it reads: “Workers participate in the processes of planning, regulation, management and control of the economy. The law regulates the participation of labor groups in the administration and management of state business entities and budgeted units.

In this context, with great fanfare, it has been announced that from January 16 to March 31, all companies and budgeted units in the country will participate in the presentation of their plan or budget corresponding to the current 2023.

In a cover story that appeared in the newspaper workers (“La economía en la mira de los colectivos trabajos”, edition of January 16) states that “The analysis must be based on correspondence with the demands and needs present in the economy, and exchange in depth and arguments in each center, because the information of the figures is not enough”.

The tag refers to trying to avoid a repetition of what has been a trend in this type of union assemblies: the presentation by the administrations of a report loaded with figures and technicalities that say nothing to the workers, and that cause a general yawn. of those attending these meetings.

However, it is very difficult to arouse the interest of the workers in the face of this new farce of the pro-government unions in collusion with the Castro authorities. Hardly anyone will believe that raising two or three things related to the entity where they work can solve the big problems that overwhelm Cubans, such as shortages of basic necessities, inflation and the loss of the ability to purchase wages. , among others.

On the other hand, it highlights the hypocrisy of the authorities when they indicate that one of the topics that should focus the debates of these assemblies is the way in which progress should be made in reducing inequalities. What inequalities does Castroism now want to be fought by the workers? Because it is clear to everyone that the greatest inequality that currently exists in Cuba —of course, if we except the one that exists between the ruling class and ordinary Cubans— has been caused by the establishment of freely convertible currency stores, which exclude a good part of Cubans from the only moderately supplied stores in the country.

In the midst of all this assembly circus that takes place in the state entities of the nation, some might wonder why at this moment this invitation has been given more diffusion than on previous occasions.

One answer could be related to Castroism’s attempt to keep workers entertained, at a time when fleeing the country is the only option on the minds of many Cubans.
