Lázaro Vargas, icon of Industriales, turns 59

Lázaro Vargas, Béisbol, Cuba

Havana Cuba. – In a emotional post, the sports commentator Modesto Agüero has remembered Lázaro Vargas, one of the great third base players that Cuba has produced. Vargas, who was part of that “all-star” team that won several Olympics and world championships, which also included figures such as Orestes Kindelán, Orlando “El Duque” Hernández, Omar Linares, Javier Méndez, Víctor Mesa, Lourdes Gurriel, Germán Mesa and Antonio Pacheco, among other stars.

Within that constellation, Vargas was one of the most complete athletes in the national sport, with excellent qualities both defensively and in the batting box.

Although he played primarily as a third baseman, Vargas played all positions in official tournaments and National Series. His talent for playing third base, in an era full of highly competitive ballplayers, could not be eclipsed even by Omar Linares, another outstanding man guarding the penultimate base.

Born in San Miguel del Padrón, on January 18, 1964, Lázaro Vargas wore Industriales blue until his retirement in 2003. Throughout 22 National Series he maintained a brilliant performance, even after the serious injury suffered in the final against Villa Clara, in 1994, which kept him away from the diamond for almost two years.

His impressive record includes four national championships, two Olympic gold medals (Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996), two World Cups (Amsterdam 1986 and Rome 1988), two Intercontinental Cups (Edmonton, 1985 and Havana, 1987) and two gold medals in Games Pan American Games (Indianapolis, 1987 and Havana, 1991).

In the National Series he registered a total of 6,738 times at bat with 2,133 hits (310 doubles, 50 extra-base hits and 108 home runs), for an offensive average of 317. He scored 1,109 runs and drove in another 1,065, becoming the top scorer in the 1985-1986 edition, and batting leader in the 1983-’84 and 1985-’86 installments.
