Boston awards minor league deal to Alfaro

Valentine jumps into the void

The Red Sox have reached a minor league deal with Colombian catcher Jorge Alfaro, a source told MLB.com’s Ian Browne.

It has been reported that the Boston team, which has not confirmed the deal, would pay Alfaro $2 million if he earns a spot on the big team roster. The deal would also include two options to opt out on June 1 and July 1 if he isn’t called up to the majors by one of those dates.

Alfaro’s arrival gives the Red Sox some depth at a position without many alternatives, with just two catchers on their 40-man roster, with Reese McGuire set to see the most playing time in 2023.

Alfaro – who will likely enter a contest with Connor Wong for the backup job in Spring Training – entered the free market after not receiving a contract from the Padres in November.
