Father Héctor Fariña from the María Auxiliadora parish, affirmed that the best way to avoid vote buying is by complying with article 118 of the National Constitution and articles 1, 4, 94 and 332 of the Electoral Code.
“I am 39 years old, in each election I have accompanied my father to vote. As a child and then a teenager, it was quite an event. Until I got the first time to vote. My family is of colorado descent and after my father, I became an empirical electoral observer, ”he explained.
He maintained that it caught his attention that many people did not vote. So he searched and found that in our legislation, voting is mandatory, but many laws in our country are not complied with.
“Paraguay is not an island, it is surrounded by countries that in their legislation practice compulsory voting. So, this absenteeism encourages people to finally go motivated, oiled to vote. Therefore, whoever has more money has more chances of winning. This happens in all sectors, not only in the ANR. What is dramatic about this is that the majority of those absent are young people between the ages of 18 and 29. young people who were already born in a democracy and are not interested, ”he said.
He pointed out that the last presidential internships turned out to be the most prostituted elections, since there were cities where people did not vote for free.
“Article 118 of the National Constitution and articles 1, 4, 94 and 332 of the Electoral Code establish that voting is mandatory. The law is not intended to punish the voter, it is intended for people to participate because otherwise our democracy does not have legitimacy and it becomes a plutocracy, the government of money”, he warned.
He finally argued that the people who with absenteeism as a form of protest, are useless.
“It’s an anger king (in vain) because absolutely nothing changes,” he said.
