The “unpopular” opinion of Yordenis Ugás

Yordenis Ugás, Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba.- The Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás has published in Facebook an opinion that he himself describes as “unpopular”, perhaps because of the discomfort that certain truths arouse. In his message, the World Boxing Association Welterweight Super Champion lamented that while Cuban emigrants rack their brains and upset their spirits thinking about the way to achieve freedom, those who live on the island and suffer the horrors of the dictatorship, avoid talking about solutions.

“Those of us who live outside of Cuba, thank God with clothes, food and freedom, spend more energy (…) and think more about the freedom of Cuba than those who live inside it,” he points out.

His words could be true. Like Ugás, there are several who believe that the Cubans seem to have renounced peaceful struggle, even civic resistance as methods to finish dismantling what has already fallen. The system is definitively paralyzed, the government is a fallacy. Only three truths remain: repression, famine and exodus. The first forces citizens to endure the second and think of the third as the only possible way out of a state so full of opprobrium.

“The issue of freedom, of deciding for your life (…) seems that this is not a popular issue on our Island,” laments Ugás, and it is as if he had just left one of the many queues where citizen energy is consumed. between complaints and gossip that are pure catharsis.

Already in last october Yordenis Ugás had expressed that the Cuban people have in their hands to free themselves from the Castro regime that has governed the country for more than 60 years.

“If the Cuban people decide their freedom is closer than ever. That dictatorship without morals will only exist until the people want it,” said the prominent boxer in social media after attending a demonstration held on 8th Street in Miami.
