Popularity of “corcholatas” will take off in 2023, but AMLO will maintain control

Popularity of "corcholatas" will take off in 2023, but AMLO will maintain control

In the last 22 years, López Obrador has been part of public opinion. Whether as a candidate for governor of Tabasco, president of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), as head of government, three times as a presidential candidate and four years as president, his name has been on the news, in the press and now on social media.

Thus, accustomed to the spotlight, to setting an agenda and being the politician who moves the masses, the president will have to share his space with the aspirants and at the end of this 2023 with him or the one chosen to be the candidate of Morena.

But according to analysts, neither the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum; the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrardthe Secretary of the Interior, Adam Augusto Lopezzo the senator, Ricardo Monrealit will overshadow him, because although they will take away spaces, a decline is not expected for the president.

“Generally the presidents arrive very weakened, although there is still time for the presidential election, he will be a great asset for whoever is anointed, whoever Morena decides to be the candidate, neither Sheinbaum nor Ebrard nor Adán, they will not steal reflectors, rather, they will want to be by their side”, adds Rosiles.

The power in your hands

Since June 2021, President López Obrador talks about the presidential succession process. Since then, its “candidates” have grown in voting preferences and monopolizing spaces in the media. Whether it is with his support for campaign closures, conferences to share government experiences, the presentation of its structures towards 2024, or on work tours, however, President López Obrador continues to play a leading role.

“The president continues to have all the power in his hands, the candidates that are taking shape are careful not to show a distance from the president, rather they seek to be the one who sees himself closest to him, yes, they are already sharing spaces with the president ”, says Azucena Rojas, a professor at the School of Government of the Technological Institute of Higher Studies Monterrey (ITESM).

The president is the one who put his ‘corcholatas’ in the presidential race. Since he listed his possible replacements, Sheinbaum, Ebrard and López Hernández have been greeted with shouts of president, president! in any political event in which they participate.

It is also the president himself who is in charge of describing them as “his brothers” and highlighting their qualities, so that despite their gaining strength, power continues to be held by López Obrador.

“López Obrador is an expert in access to power, but he has not been so expert in the exercise of government, the stage is set so that the president continues to be the figure, no ‘corcholata’ is going to be able to compete with him,” he maintains. .
