Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Baltazar Porras as Archbishop of Caracas

Cardinal Baltazar Porras is, since 2018, the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Caracas and Bishop of Mérida. After this appointment, the Archdiocese in the Andean entity is assumed by Monsignor Helizandro Terán Bermúdez


The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) reported this Tuesday, January 17, that Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Baltazar Porras, current Bishop of Mérida, as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Caracas.

Cardinal Baltazar Porras had been appointed since 2018 as apostolic administrator of said Archdiocese after the resignation of the late Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino, after complying with the provisions of Canon Law to resign after reaching the age of 75.

Meanwhile, when the Archdiocese of Mérida becomes vacant, Monsignor Helizandro Terán Bermúdez assumes as Archbishop and the pastoral government of the entity.

Terán had been appointed on March 19, 2022, as Coadjutor Archbishop, with the right of succession.

On October 10, 1944, Cardinal Baltazar Porras was born in Caracas and, after studying Baccalaureate and Philosophy at the Interdiocesan Seminary in the capital city, he was sent to the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Spain, where he obtained a Licentiate in Theology, in 1966. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology at the Higher Institute of Pastoral Care of the same University in 1977.

He was ordained as a priest on July 30, 1967 in the Cathedral of Calabozo, Guárico state. Here he was Cooperator Vicar, Parish Priest, Cursillo Diocesan Advisor, professor at the Seminary and at other public and private institutes. He is the director of the Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario School and a professor at the IUT de los Llanos.

Since 1991 he held the diocese of Mérida as its Archbishop and was Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of San Cristóbal until June 8, 1999.

On November 19, 2016, he was designated as a cardinal by Pope Francis.

Currently he is also a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and of the Departments for the Clergy; for the Laity-Family and Life; for Culture and Education.
