The first case of hantavirus of 2023 in the province of Los Santos, was detected by the regional Ministry of Health (Minsa), which assured that it continues its inspections in various communities in the province, to avoid new infections.
This is a 56-year-old man from Río Viejo de Perina, El Bebedero, Tonosí who presented a picture of Hantavirus fever.
According to the Minsa, the province of Los Santos closed the year 2022 with 39 cases of Hantavirus and this week the first case of 2023 was registered.
Once this first case was confirmed, the field tests were carried out and the necessary recommendations were provided to avoid other infections.
Health personnel carried out inspections in the corregimientos of La Villa, Llano Largo, La Espigadilla, El Guayabal, Los Olivos, El Bongo, El Espinal, La Pasera, Las Tablas, Macaracas and Pedasí.
Also, through Vector Control technicians, traps were placed around the homes and places frequented by the patients, to verify the presence of the disease-transmitting rat.
In addition to inspection and teaching actions, traps are also placed for prevalence studies that are permanently developed in conjunction with the Gorgas Memorial Institute.

The Minsa recommends that people keep their homes and surroundings clean, as well as the collected grains (such as rice and corn), store them and seal them to prevent the rodent from having contact and leaving their feces and urine in the surroundings. .
It is also recommended to keep the stoves and utensils clean, and that they are protected to prevent the rodent from having any kind of contact, since the hantavirus is transmitted by inhaling saliva, urine, or excrement from infected rodents.
