Conversation about President Boric on Twitter: 43% of mentions in early January were linked to pardons

More than 1.7 million mentions is the total conversation about the President gabriel boric on Twitter, between December 30, 2022 and January 10, 2023, according to the Socialtrack data capture and analysis platform. Of this total, 765,103 mentions (43%) are linked to the pardons of the President -granted 12 to those convicted in the context of the social outbreak and to the ex-frontist Jorge Mateluna-.

With this level of interest, on December 31 – the day after the announcement of the pardons – it was consolidated as the third largest peak Conversation journal about the President during the last quarter of 2022, slightly below two other relevant days: the new commemoration of October 18 and the trip that the President made to the Araucanía Region.

In a large part of the sample focused on this milestone, and in particular for the three events that we highlight in this graph, the messages with the greatest impact correspond to communities opposed to President Boric, which again show a high level of coordination when it comes to generate and plan content, adding the presence of echo chambers.

Through a review of these data, we have been able to determine the existence of more than 75 profiles that have made 300 or more retweets to different original content associated with this milestone.

Let us remember that President Boric applied the 13 pardons on December 30. Subsequently, a report from T13 revealed louis castillo -one of those pardoned- had other convictions on his record. In 2005 he was convicted twice for theft, in 2006 for less serious injuries and robbery with violence and in 2017 for surprise robbery.

The pardon of Castillo generated criticism from the opposition and triggered the resignation of the Minister of Justice, Marcela Riosand President Boric’s chief of staff, Matías Meza-Lopehandía.

Also, after the pardons, Chile Vamos -with the exception of Senator Manuel Jose Ossandon (RN) – got off the government security desk.
