Government of Colombia and ELN again in Venezuela to address crises in peace talks

Delegations from Colombia and the ELN invite the US and other countries to their peace talks

In a document published by Senator Iván Cepeda, who is part of the Colombian government’s negotiating team, recalls that the second cycle of talks with the ELN will begin in Mexico in mid-February, so it is necessary to overcome disagreements

The delegation of the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) will have an “extraordinary meeting” in Venezuela on Tuesday, January 17, to overcome the impasse caused by the announcement by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, about a bilateral ceasefire without having agreed with that guerrilla at the dialogue table.

“The government delegation appreciates the hospitality of Venezuela to hold an extraordinary meeting with the ELN delegation next week,” says a statement issued this Friday night by the head of the Colombian government’s negotiating team, Otty Patiño.

The document, published on social networks by Senator Iván Cepeda, who is part of the Colombian government’s negotiating team, recalls that the second cycle of talks with the ELN “It will start in Mexico in mid-February”, so it is necessary to overcome disagreements.

Last Monday that guerrilla assured that The peace negotiation with the Colombian government is “in crisis” after President Petro’s announcement of a bilateral ceasefire that the guerrilla does not recognize because it was not agreed upon in the talks taking place in Caracas.

“As the government does not comply with the discussion processes of the Table (negotiation) and takes unilateral measures and makes them public, these procedures put the development of the Table in crisis,” the ELN said in a statement released by that guerrilla in his moment.

There is no agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, but it is estimated that the first point that the parties will address is to clarify the situation derived from the announcement of the head of state on the ceasefire, reported the agency Eph.

Likewise, the parties are expected to adjust the communication protocols on the progress of the dialogues so that a situation similar to the one that occurred with the announcement made by President Petro on the night of December 31 is not repeated.

The meeting will travel, in addition to Patiño, the High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda; congressmen María José Pizarro and Iván Cepeda; as well as the members of the negotiation team of the Nigerian Government Rentería, José Félix Lafaurie and Olga Silva.

Petro has defended a policy of “total peace” to which it intends to link various armed groups operating in the country to start peace negotiations, although for the moment the ELN is the only one with which a formal dialogue has begun.
