Parish in the Tulio Febres Cordero municipality of Mérida is cut off by the rains

Councilor Manuel Linares, from the Tulio Febres Cordero municipality in Mérida, said that the María Concepción Palacios parish has been incommunicado for a month after the rains blocked roads and damaged bridges. He warned that the community makes makeshift bridges that puts them even more in danger

Manuel Linares, councilor of the Tulio Febres Cordero municipality of the Mérida state and which borders the southern area of Lake Maracaibo, warned this Thursday, January 12, that the Maria de la Concepción Palacios y Blanco parish has been seriously affected by the rainfall that registered a few weeks ago, which caused damage to roads and the collapse of several bridges due to the landslides that occurred.

In an interview granted to Globovisión, Linares alerted the National Executive that the parish in question is highly productive because cocoa, banana, coffee, lechoza, guava, among other things, are harvested there, and its 1,500 inhabitants live on what is harvested there; products that are generally taken to the markets in the center of the country.

For this reason, he warned that the population has been incommunicado for at least a month and that they have received food by air from the Government of Mérida. However, he warned that more support is needed from the authorities to clear the roads and reconnect the population because, in an artisanal way, the same citizens put wooden planks to be able to travel and that, in his opinion, is very dangerous. .

The councilor explained that the little they have been able to do has been done with the meager economic resources they have, since they requested additional credit to serve the population of that Merida parish and they have not yet been granted it.

He proposed to the regional and national authorities the possibility of reconfiguring the penetration routes to avoid improvisation, as well as asking that the work be carried out a little more quickly.

He said that another problem that persists in that municipality of Mérida is the issue of access to gasoline which, added to the problem raised, creates an even bigger problem for them due to the impossibility of taking the products they harvest to the markets and therefore receiving money.

In this sense, he stressed that up to two months can go by without a fuel supply.

Mérida is one of the states of the country most affected by the rains during the year 2022. Even at the beginning of 2023 the precipitations have wreaked havoc again. Between January 3 and 4, the water collapsed the Mucujún dam and left the city of Mérida without this resource.

Marielys Sacipa, representative of the Secretary of Public Services of the government of Mérida, informed Radio Faith and Joy that the collapse of the Mucujún dam was also due to the rise of the river that bears the same name. For this reason the Burgoin plant is paralyzed.

Highways 008 and 002 have had to be closed preventively due to landslides on the road and that the government of Mérida is trying to clear.

On the other hand, it was learned that in the Antonio Pinto Salinas municipality there was a landslide near the La Chicharronera sector, while on trunk 007 there are also roadblocks due to landslides and closure of the pass from Tovar to the capital of the Andean entity.
