The women who aspire to the presidency in 2023

Blas Llano, a national senator for the Liberal Party (PLRA), reported last Thursday that Esperanza Martínez, a senator for the Guasu Front, joined Kattya González, a PEN deputy, as a candidate for president of the Republic.

In this way, the FG legislator joins a long list of opposition presidential candidates. In the payroll they appear; Efraín Alegre, Paraguayo Cubas, Sebastián Villarejo, Carlos Rejala, Hugo Fleitas, Sixto Pereira, Martín Burt, among others.

Martínez expressed in this regard that only at the end of the month will he decide whether or not to run for the presidency of the Republic.

“Our proposal is that the unit should be based on a minimum agenda of programmatic axes. It is not a minor debate to agree on four or five points and that this is what we are going to present to society to build governance, ”she said.

TEACHINGS
In 2008, progressive sectors allied to the PLRA came to power, however, a separation led to the political trial of Lugo 18 months after the end of his administration.
When asked about the experiences left by this alliance, she expressed that the roadmap should be very clear and not see the Executive as a division of positions so as not to make the same mistakes.

“We have to agree on what we will do with the government, and from there work swiftly. Usually we leave the program as a mere compliance, but in reality, it is very important”, he stated.

MARTINEZ
Clara Martínez, a political scientist, stated that the opposition has to unite to have any chance of achieving victory. In other words, both Kattya González and Martínez have good profiles, but this is not enough to achieve victory in 2023.

“In the case of the senator, she was Minister of Health in the Lugo era. She has a lot of experience in politics. She established free health care at the time, but in the same way she needs to consolidate it, establish electoral alliances”, she affirmed.

The analyst doubted that the opposition will arrive united, because the Guasu Front and the Patria Querida party defend contradictory policies.
SLOW PROCESS
The interviewee regretted that only 15% of legislators are women. A lower figure even than that of neighboring Bolivia.
“I believe that there is a good leadership of women who are positioning themselves. The example that I can give is that of Blanca Ovelar in 2008. She was a good candidate and the one who went the furthest in politics”, she expressed.

For the political scientist, Norman Harrison, he was one of the best profiled to be a candidate. However, he himself gave up on his intentions last October. He also highlighted Miguel Prieto, current mayor of Ciudad del Este.
