Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Wednesday that those involved in the invasion and the destruction of government buildings, the judiciary and the legislature will have their right to defense respected, but they will be punished.
Lula received today senators and deputies, among them the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, and the interim president of the Senate, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, who went to the Planalto Palace to deliver the decree of intervention in security of the Federal District, quickly approved by Congress.
Last-minute reports indicate that the authorities are reinforcing security throughout the country in the face of a new call by the Bolsonaristas to protest in various cities.
In a speech delivered this Wednesday, the interim security chief of the Federal District of Brasilia, Ricardo Cappelli, reassured the population: “There is no possibility that the events that occurred on the 8th will be repeated in the Federal District.”
He praised the actions of the police and thanked his boss, Robson Candido, for having “shown an exemplary position since Sunday night and has supported us in all our demands. All the requests we made were immediately attended to by the Civil Police.
For his part, Lula once again criticized former President Jair Bolsonaro for not accepting the electoral result and called those who invaded and destroyed public buildings in Brasilia “crazy”.
