Government negotiates with carriers so that they do not raise passengers

With the interest of finding a solution that benefits all sectors, the Government and transport unions are looking for a fuel subsidy mechanism so that drivers do not increase the price of tickets on the different routes.

This was reported yesterday by the Minister of the Presidency and coordinator of the Transportation Cabinet, Lisandro Macarrulla, who also reported that this subsidy would be apart from the money that the Government assumes in the cost of fuel, which in recent months has increased due to the oil rise.

“We are studying the mechanism and the amount and how that amount compensates for the increase in costs that they already have despite the fuel subsidized by the State, because you know that although the State subsidizes fuel, it has increased.
So, they have had an increase in their costs and we are aware of that and we are looking for a solution so that this is not transferred to the Dominican people,” said the official when interviewed in the corridors of the National Palace.

a mature dialogue

The minister argued that for several weeks both sectors have been working and dialoguing in a mature manner so that the impact of the increase in the price of oil does not affect the price of gasoline in the Dominican Republic.

“In that sense, we have come into a very mature dialogue, all very aware of the responsibility we have with society that through a mechanism the Dominican State subsidizes the increase in the price of fuel so that carriers do not have to increase the price. nor do they assume responsibility for the transport subsidy,” he pointed out.

Likewise, he said that this dialogue has been carried out within the framework of an intelligent negotiation, in which each of the parties has put their effort to make it as good as possible.

“One of the problems that the authorities had previously had with this sector is that the authorities wanted the transport sector to assume the social subsidy for this service. We are aware that each driver who owns his car is an entrepreneur. We cannot ask them or any businessman to subsidize the government’s social policy. In that sense, and aware of the role of each one, we are looking for the best solution for the Dominican people,” added the official, insisting that all variables are being studied.

There are not and will not be any rate increases.

The Minister of the Presidency pointed out that there is still no increase in ticket prices, for which he called on the population not to worry because the solution “apparently” is that there will be no increases, at least in the coming weeks. He said that the important thing is that the population receives a quality service in the midst of the precariousness with which it is offered, until the transformations that are promoted are carried out.
