The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, arrived in Chile last Monday for his first official visit. He even had planned on his agenda to participate together with President Gabriel Boric in the announcement of the expansion of the country’s railway network that will link Santiago with Valparaíso. However, the Colombian president had to travel to Colombia on an emergency basis to attend, together with his government team, an avalanche that occurred in the southwest of his country, where a landslide devastated some homes and a school.
According to the Colombian authorities, the emergency in the rural area of Cauca had no fatalities. However, it left more than 150 families homeless and took away the facilities of the Alfonso Córdoba school. In addition, six people, including two elderly people, were trapped in the collapse for hours until an Air Force aircraft rescued them.
The causes would have had to do with the heavy rains that have been recorded in the area, however, the National Risk Management Unit of Colombia assured that, for some time, the Municipality of the place was warned of a possible situation of this kind. magnitude due to its geographical position.
It should be noted that the visit to our country was aimed at strengthening ties and coordinating regional strategies with President Gabriel Boric, with whom he shares an ideology. During his stay in Chile, Petro was welcomed with a ceremony at the Palacio de La Moneda, to later be part of a bilateral meeting in the red room. In addition, both presidents signed an agreement between countries and the Colombian president delivered a wreath at the Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins Monument.
Regarding the agenda on his second day of official visit, the Head of State intended to attend the Palace of the Courts of Justice to meet with the president of the Supreme Court, Ricardo Blanco, and the aforementioned announcement about transportation in the city of Limache.
