The Border Patrol began this Saturday the return to Mexico of Cubans and Nicaraguans. The journalist from Real America’s VoiceAuden Cabello, shared a video on Sunday of the delivery of migrants to Mexican agents of the National Institute of Migration at the International Bridge 2, located in Piedras Negras (Coahuila).
The return occurs while a “group of processed migrants watch and wait to legally enter under the new probation program,” the communicator stressed on their social networks. The expulsion of these Cubans took place under Title 42a controversial regulation implemented by the previous president, Donald Trump, during the coronavirus pandemic and that allows rapid deportations.
The communicator, who has established himself for several days in the area, revealed the modus operandi of the US and Mexican authorities for the expulsion of the Cubans. Cabello documented through videos the crossings of families through the Rio Grande and according to what he said, after turning himself in, the Border Patrol separates them and processes them in less than two hours.
They load them into vans and hand them over to Mexican Immigration agents. A woman, who crossed with her sick daughter, told the journalist that the Border Patrol kept her documents and expelled them. The Cuban was put on a bus that took her to the state of Guerrero. The intention “is to keep them away from the border and to make it more difficult for them to cross, because they remember that expulsion is not deportation.”
This newspaper asked Piedras Negras Migration for a report on the expulsions and the destination points to which the Cubans are taken, but they refused to provide the information.
This Monday, the Government of Mexico supported the program of the Joe Biden Administration in which In exchange for 30,000 monthly paroles, the US will deport Cubans and others in an illegal situation. “It is a little light in the tunnel, it is already an option, it is already an alternative that they have decided to issue visas or permits,” said the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Mexico agreed to receive irregular migrants who are expelled from the neighboring country while the US explores mechanisms to increase investment in Central America and tackle the root causes of forced migration, a source told the EFE news agency.
In the same conference offered by the Government of Mexico, the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed with a graph that during 2022, Cubans were the migrants who entered the most through the southern border of the United States. According to data from the Border Patrol 294,816 island nationals were detained, 209,832 Nicaraguans, 157,855 Venezuelans, 154,919 Colombians, 59,937 Haitians, 53,175 Ecuadorians, and 831,455 of other nationalities. In total there were 1,761,989 people.
The Mexican foreign minister mentioned that Biden’s proposal consists of “investment in the countries of Central America and other countries, because people are migrating essentially due to conditions of poverty” and they should try to “regulate” migration through the possibility of “going to the United States to work”, which he called “labor mobility”.
According to Ebrard, “for the first time the United States has begun to talk about official documents,” which will allow people from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Haiti to carry out an online procedure instead of a journey where coyotes “treat them in a inhumane way, put them at risk.
This Tuesday, Mexico will host the Summit of North American Leaders, known as the Three Amigos Summit, with the participation of the presidents of Mexico, the United States and Canada.
