The silence of the federal government
On Thursday, January 5, the fire continued and no competent federal authority, such as the Ministry of the Environment, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), Pemex or the Presidency, had issued any position or provided more support, despite the fact that the analyzes of the water samples showed that it was diesel that caused the fire.
“We continue to call on the authorities. As you can see, the smoke is too much. Regardless of what is here hurting the spring, the damage to the environment that is being caused is not minor,” said the municipal president of Jilotepec.
They define Pemex
Until January 6, after questions from the media in the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the federal government finally reported on the fire at the Mexicaltongo spring.
Adán Augusto, head of the Ministry of the Interior, assured that the cause was not a hydrocarbon leak, but a spill of “highly polluting” toxic waste from a private company.
“That is what caused the fire, it is being attended to,” he said.
He added that Pemex was addressing the problem in conjunction with Conagua, federal Civil Protection and the State of Mexico.
“Surely, in the next few days it should be controlled, but a cleaning job is coming. They are talking with the residents. Although it is not the responsibility of Petróleos Mexicanos, Petróleos Mexicanos coordinates the work and maintains dialogue with them,” the secretary settled.
