Impact of the World Cup on the environment

WATCH VIDEO

The last week of the World Cup, Argentina was dyed blue and white and many of us went out to celebrate in the streets. However, this concentration of people resulted in the generation of a large amount of waste. The question is, how can we celebrate without making a mess?

When I observed the piles of plastic bottles and cans in the vicinity of the obelisk, my environmental part could not look the other way and wondered if, in the event of becoming champions again in 4 years, we could avoid the concentration of garbage left on the street at the end of the festivities.

So I thought of some alternatives:

First of all, let’s remember that the best waste is the one that is not generated, therefore, we could avoid buying disposable water bottles by taking our own reusable bottles. Also, for this to work, we should have hydration points that allow us to refill our bottles when they are empty.

In the case of other beverages that do or do come bottled, such as sodas or beer, it is worth remembering that both plastic bottles and cans are recyclable, therefore, they should not end up in the trash but should be be placed in bins destined for recyclable waste.

Having said all this, it is true that even the most environmentally committed person can find it difficult to find a bin of recyclables at a mass event, which is why the best thing we can do is take our own bottles and cans. Although today it may seem impossible to us, it is necessary that we propose to be part of the solution and encourage ourselves to carry out a cultural change in which when we make the decision to go to an event of these characteristics, in addition to grabbing the wallet and the keys let’s incorporate carrying a bag or backpack where we can store our own waste. If we don’t throw waste on the floor in our house, why do we do it on public roads?
