The Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the violent events that occurred at the headquarters of the Brazilian Parliament, where a large number of followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the headquarters of the Parliament in a show of repudiation of the new president Lula da Silva.
“Uruguay condemns the episodes of violence against institutions in Brazil and calls for respect for the rule of law, democracy and its government,” says the statement from the Foreign Ministry.
Leaders of the countries of the region expressed their repudiation
The political leaders of Latin America have come out en bloc to support the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after the Bolsonarista attack this Sunday against some of the main institutions, in a common message that is repeated on the left and right of the spectrum political.
The first to speak on social networks was the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to request the application of the Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). “It is urgent time for the OAS meeting if it wants to continue to live as an institution and apply the democratic charter,” Petro has published on his Twitter account.
«All my solidarity to (Luiz Inácio) Lula (Da Silva) and the people of Brazil. Fascism decides to strike. The rights have not been able to maintain the pact of non-violence », he pointed out.
Petro recalled that his government has defended strengthening the inter-American human rights system by applying current regulations and expanding the charter to women’s, environmental and collective rights “but the response is parliamentary coups or violent coups from the extreme right”.
“Attack against the three powers”
For his part, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has described as “unpresentable” the attack on “the three powers” of Brazil, which he has attributed to Bolsonaristas. Thus, he has offered “all” of Chile’s support “in the face of this cowardly and vile attack on democracy.”
Also from Argentina, its president, Alberto Fernández, has expressed his “unconditional” support for Lula in the face of “an attempted coup.” He hopes for regional unity in the face of “this unacceptable anti-democratic reaction that is trying to impose itself in Brazil.”
«Democracy is the only political system that guarantees freedoms and forces us to respect the popular verdict. Those who try to ignore the will of the majority, threaten democracy and deserve not only the corresponding legal sanction, but also the absolute rejection of the international community, “he said on Twitter.
The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has “strongly” condemned the “violent and undemocratic” acts in Brazil, since he understands that they are aimed at “generating chaos” and failing to comply with “the popular will” expressed in the 2022 elections, from which Bolsonaro was defeated.
For his part, the head of state of Ecuador, the conservative Guillermo Lasso, has joined the criticism against “the actions of disrespect and vandalism” perpetrated against “democratic institutions”, since they “attack the democratic order and citizen security ».
“I express my support and that of my government to the Lula regime, legally constituted,” Lasso stressed.
