Mining: Seven projects would boost employment

The Con Punche Peru program, created by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and which proposes, among other measures, the “accompaniment and unlocking” of nine projects whose investment amounts to US$10,555 million, will have a direct impact on the generation of thousands of jobs.

The head of the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE), Víctor Fuentes, explained to Peru21 that seven of these projects (see table), whose disbursement would be US$10.258 million, will generate 155,000 direct and indirect jobs. “It must be considered that for each position created in the sector, eight indirect jobs are generated.”

Regarding national production, he explained that the impact would be S/32 billion additional to GDP.

“This amount is the effect of a direct impact that comes from increased production, an indirect impact that comes from the increased activity of suppliers, and an induced impact that comes through workers’ salaries,” he said.

However, for Fuentes it is also necessary to promote the other mining projects in the pipeline.

Currently there is a portfolio that amounts to US$53,168 million that includes La Granja (US$5,000 million), Conga (US$4,800 million), Tía María (US$1,400 million), among others.

“If we want to close gaps, we must generate projects that pay taxes. It is important to promote these projects due to the international context that exists now, ”she assured.

In the case of San Gabriel, the Executive will support social management with the communities, and with the Río Seco Copper Plant, the zoning and authorization for the Technological Industrial Park.
