The former mayor of La Paz Luis Revilla declared himself in hiding, after his wife, Maricruz Rivera, was summoned to testify this Monday in the case of the alleged overpriced purchase of PumaKatari buses. The former municipal authority considers that this judicial action confirms that there is political pressure from the government to justice, for which he also declares himself politically persecuted.

“Today I am in hiding and I will be like this as long as possible and let us continue requesting more elements that confirm even more that (Jesus) Vera burned the buses (PumaKatari), our 66 PumaKataris and today he only wants to make that sad chapter of the history of La Paz and our country”, Revilla points out in a handwritten letter where he explains the reasons for his decision.

His wife was summoned by the court to testify as a witness in this case, according to the Central Affairs portal, which also published a screenshot of the judicial summons. In his letter, Revilla notes that his partner was summoned as a witness in this case, despite the fact that when the purchase of the buses took place they did not even know each other.

According to the document issued by the Santa Cruz Departmental Prosecutor’s Office, Rivera is summoned to appear to testify at 2:00 p.m. on January 31 as a witness.

The previous week, the Public Ministry determined the apprehension of the former mayor of the seat of government, for the alleged overpricing in the purchase of buses for municipal transport.

The process is promoted by the former leader of the Federation of Neighborhood Boards (Fejuve) related to the Movement for Socialism (MAS), Jesús Vera, who was also prosecuted for the burning of 60 municipal buses during the 2019 conflicts. Vera now accuses Revilla for the purchase of 61 municipal buses with a surcharge of 26 million dollars.

Here is the letter written by former mayor Revilla:
