Concern about the balance of power. Recently, the Avanza País congresswoman, presented a bill which proposes the for the only time, the mandate of the president of the National Election Jury (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), a situation that has caused an alert.

Faced with this situation, the Coalición Ciudadana collective urges the members of Parliament not to increase tension in the face of the political crisis that the country is going through, since this reform, far from offering solutions, “would further damage our precarious democracy because they affect the balance of powers and autonomy of the electoral bodies”.

“When that happens, the balance of power in the country is put at risk, favoring various forms of political arbitrariness. In addition, it affects the efforts of Congress itself aimed at political and electoral reform, ”they say in a statement.

The collective highlights that this is not a solution to Peru’s political and social instability, but rather increases mistrust in public institutions as well as the integrity of early general elections.

“What is at stake are the changes that citizens demand and the stability necessary to resume the path of development,” they conclude.

What does the Amuruz bill propose?

The congresswoman of the Avanza País bench, Rosselli Amuruz, presented the bill that proposes to cut the mandate of the presidents of the electoral entities: the National Election Jury and the National Office of Electoral Processes.

“In accordance with the advancement of the elections, I presented the bill that cuts, for the only time, the mandate of the president of the JNE and the head of the ONPE to guarantee that the next elections are free of questioning,” he wrote in his Twitter account. Twitter.

According to the document presented, the reform cuts the mandate of both presidents of the electoral bodies for the only time.

“Art. 1 The purpose of this law is to incorporate a Special Transitory Provision in the Political Constitution of Peru, which cuts the mandate of the president of the National Election Jury-JNE and the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes”, the proposal states.

“Art. 2 The president of the National Election Jury – JNE and the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes – ONPE, conclude their mandate in April 2023. The deadlines established in articles 180 and 182 do not apply to them, by exception. respectively of the Political Constitution of the State”, he adds.
