Ovidio Guzmán, son of jailed drug trafficker Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán, obtained a judicial stay against an immediate extradition to the United Stateswhich requires it for drug trafficking, according to a ruling released this Friday.

“The ex officio suspension is decreed flatly with respect to acts consisting of deportation, expulsion, extradition and their execution” in such a way that “it is not handed over to the government of the United States of America, nor to any other State”, indicates the resolution of a judge.

Washington claims Ovidio Guzmán and his brother Joaquín for conspiracy to export cocaine to that country, methamphetamines and marijuana. For each one he offers a five million dollar reward.

The Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, had already ruled out an express extradition of Guzmán on Thursday to the United States, clarifying that this request will follow the regular course.

This Friday, the official recalled that the Mexican extradition law “sets a series of deadlines for the elements” and “evidence against” the defendant to be presented.

“We estimate that is going to happen four to six weeks from now by the United States, who submitted the extradition request (in September 2019),” Ebrard said at a press conference.

At Ovidio’s hearing this Friday in El Altiplano, a judge established that The United States has until March 5 to formalize its extradition request, the press reported.

The Mexican government accuses Guzmán of crimes against health and related to firearmsalthough there are also investigations linked to organized crime, said the Secretary of Public Security, Roca Icela Rodríguez.

Guzmán, known by the alias “El Ratón”, He was arrested on Thursday in the city of Culiacán (northwest), in an operation that left 10 soldiers and 19 suspected criminals dead, according to the authorities.
