A young doctor residing in El Salvador, Guantanamo municipality, was murdered of a shot in fact that occurred this Thursday, and in which the paramedic who accompanied him was also seriously injured, official media report. It would be the first femicide reported this year in Cuba; since apparently there was or was an affective relationship between the attacker and the victim.
The tragic event took place around 11:00 am, in Paseo between 1 and 2 Oeste, in the aforementioned province, when an agent of the motorized force of the Provincial Traffic Department fired at least twice against his victims, according to the note from the local newspaper overcome.
The fatal victim was identified as Damaris Rodríguez Domínguez, a specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine and a graduate of Intensive Care at the Francisco Castro Ceruto Polyclinic. The injured man is named Luis Miguel Bartoló Tamayo and he was driving an ambulance from the Medical Emergency System (SIUM).
A passerby, who preferred not to be identified, promptly called the police when he heard two shots, after which the ambulance began to cross the street. It was then that he was able to see the woman, who was later assisted and transferred in an ambulance, according to the report.
Damián Martínez, a resident of the place and also an eyewitness, corroborated that story and added that he saw the perpetrator walk away from the ambulance after the shots were fired.
The alleged murderer was detained by law enforcement, without offering resistance, and is currently under investigation. So far, his identity has not been revealed nor the reasons that would have led him to commit the act.
However, users of social networks have affirmed that it was the ex-partner of the deceased doctor, and that the injured paramedic currently had a sentimental relationship with her, circumstances that have led many to classify the event as a femicide.
Medical reports from the Dr. Agostinho Netro General Hospital, cited by the local media, indicate that Bartolo Tamayo remained in the Intensive Care unit reported this Friday in stable critical condition. He was intubated.
The report offered by Dr. Luis Alberto Ramírez Díaz, surgical deputy director of the institution, indicates that the injured man presents facial edema and an unstable nasal fracture that caused bleeding throughout the night, but remains hemodynamically stable.
In addition, he reiterated that the projectile did not affect internal organs, but its impact on the facial mass could cause sequelae for the patient. If his evolution continues favourably, in the next few hours he should be extubated and the process of waking him up will begin to evaluate his reactions in a general way.
They register 34 femicides in Cuba during 2022, two less than in the previous year
In Cuba, femicides are not typified among the crimes included in the new Penal Code, approved in May 2022. Several sectors of the island’s civil society criticize the government for this position and demand a law against gender violence.
Recently the Cuban independent feminist platform taut wings announced that 2022 had closed for Cuba with 34 confirmed femicides, two fewer than those recorded in the previous year.
Of the registered cases, two were vicarious femicides, they specified from that organization that together with others of the same profile, they collect data on sexist murders in the absence of an official count.
