The news was released through social media. Virologist Natalía Echeverría wrote on her Twitter account: “I use this medium to ask for guidance: A two-month-old baby was born in the north of the country and was abandoned by his mother at birth. HIV+, with withdrawal syndrome. Two months ago he has been in the same ASSE hospital awaiting the resolution of INAU, which seems to not be there before March.” The news immediately reached the authorities.

The director of the Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay (INAU), Pablo Abdala, sent him a tweet to learn about the issue. in dialogue with The ObserverAbdala commented that he was not aware of the situation but that he contacted the INAU director in Rivera, the department where the baby is, to give him more information.

According to Abdala, andhe baby was abandoned and the mother is not in a position to take care of him due to what the doctor had described in her tweet. The woman has HIV, problematic drug use and mental deficiencies. Until now, according to Abdala, the Family judge was trying to get the baby to be adopted by an aunt but that was not possible. That is why, whate has already issued a report recommending that the baby become part of INAU while waiting to be adopted. They hope that the final resolution will be in the next few days.

It will not be the definitive solution to enter INAU, it will be a transitory measure, the definitive solution will be when I have a familyAbdullah commented.

In turn, he pointed out that the baby, meanwhile, is being cared for by the educators and doctors of the Hospital de Rivera de ASSE and that, until now, the HIV tests have been negative.

“Unfortunately there are many cases that this abandonment thing happens, both here and at Pereira Rossell”he lamented.
