The passage, which had ventilation and lighting, ended in a construction under construction located in the San Juanita neighborhood of the municipality of Almoloya de Juárez, in the State of Mexico.
In January 2016, the federal government, at that time headed by Enrique Peña Nieto, confirmed the recapture of the capo, who would later be transferred to the United States, where he received a life sentence.
Ovid Falls
The Mexican drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán, wanted by US justice, was arrested on Thursday in a military operation, one of the strongest blows to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel since 2016 when his father, the imprisoned Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was arrested.
“In the early morning of January 5, personnel from the Mexican army and the National Guard (…) arrested Ovidio, the alleged leader of the Los Menores faction, related to the Pacific Cartel,” said Defense Secretary Luis Sandoval, making reference to the other name by which the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world, is known.
“This arrest represents a forceful blow to the leadership of the Pacific Cartel,” he added.
The capture, Sandoval explained, was the product of six months of reconnaissance and surveillance work. However, experts assured that the operation would be related to the visit next week of the president of the United States, Joe Biden.
Once their leader was arrested, gunmen from the criminal group carried out 19 blockades and attacks in the area, including the international airport of Culiacán, capital of Sinaloa, in the northwest of the country, and a military air base.
After his arrest, Guzmán, 32, was transferred to Mexico City in a military aircraft.
