Alegre winks at communist China and threatens to break historical bond

In interview given to the Reuters agency, Efraín Alegre threatened to break diplomatic ties with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and would open relations with China, in case of winning the general elections on April 30.

He argued that the relationship with communist China could boost exports of soybeans and beef. “Paraguay must have relations with China,” he said.

At the same time, argued that the current relationship with Taiwan does not generate sufficient benefits for Paraguay, as it would eventually communist China.

In this sense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan told the Reuters agency that from that country it pays a lot of attention to the general elections in April, with the intention of seeking to strengthen the historical ties with Paraguay.

In contrast to Alegre’s position, the ANR presidential candidate, Santiago Peña, recently

guaranteed that, if he became president, “Paraguay will continue to be an ally of Taiwan”, and will seek, at the same time, to increase the trade flow with China.
