New York will replace nearly a thousand fossil fuel vehicles with electric ones

NY.- The mayor of this city, Eric Adams, the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation (DOT), Ydanis Rodríguez, and the Commissioner of the Department of Administrative Services (DCAS), Dawn M. Pinnock, announced the allocation of 10.1 million dollars of federal funds to replace 925 vehicles in the fossil fuel-powered fleet with electric vehicles (EVs).

Likewise, 315 new EV chargers will be installed throughout the city.

DOT provided the funds through the US Department of Transportation’s Air Quality Improvement and Congestion Mitigation Program and administers the funding.

DCAS will receive $6.2 million and the remainder will go to the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

This investment helps advance the city’s goal of electrifying its entire vehicle fleet, building on steps already taken by the Adams administration to meet the Metropolis Clean Fleet Plan ahead of schedule, said the DOT Commissioner, Dominican Rodriguez.

“We see the impact of climate change every day, so this announcement recognizes that the time for meaningful change, including accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, is now,” he stressed.

“Thanks to this funding, the city will be able to replace hundreds of its municipal vehicles, including a large portion of the DOT fleet, with greener alternatives,” he said.

“Under the leadership of Mayor Adams, we are proud to work with DCAS and our other sister agencies in our shared goal of reducing emissions from the transportation sector,” Ydanis said.

“NYC already has the largest fleet of electric municipal vehicles in the US, and I commend DOT for committing to making this replacement,” said New York City Council Member Shekar Krishnan.

“The need to reduce emissions from carbon-emitting cars in NY remains urgent, both for the health of our communities and for our climate,” he added.

“The NY League of Conservation Voters” applauds Mayor Adams for continuing to “do the right things” to clean up our transportation sector, as do Commissioners Rodriguez and Pinnock.
