Cuban regime forecasts new blackouts for February

MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban government forecast new blackouts for February, less than a month after the power cuts that affected Cubans so much in 2022 would have diminished.

This prediction is due to several maintenance that will be carried out on the main thermoelectric plants in the country, according to a report by the official Canal Caribe.

The Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Vicente de la O Levy, said this Tuesday during a visit to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), in Cienfuegos, that as of January 5, unit number 3 of the aforementioned thermoelectric plant will enter a ten-day maintenance period. And later number 4, for a period of three months.

Likewise, a “rigorous and in-depth” repair will be made to the CTE Lidio Ramón Pérez, known as Felton, because “since its maintenance was completed it has been on a permanent line with 245 megawatts.”

“That means,” said the minister, “that at some point maintenance of the main thermoelectric units will coincide, especially in February,” so these outputs “could cause load deficits.”

“We are estimating that there may be hours of affectation, with a slight difference compared to the previous year,” said de la O Levy.

According to their statements, the blackouts will last two or three hours.

During 2022, Cuba went through the worst energy crisis in recent decades, with its consequent blackouts of 10 to 12 hours, unsustainable for Cubans and which resulted in popular protests throughout the entire island.

In the midst of this situation, the Cuban government dismissed Liván Arronte Cruz, who was serving as Minister of Energy and Mines, and the General Director of the Unión Eléctrica (UNE), Jorge Armando Cepero Hernández.
