Óscar Paciello, president of the Council of the Judiciary, announced that they will make the call for both positions at once. In other words, despite the fact that both ministers expire in different months this year, the contest will be held simultaneously.
The Judicial Council will have its first session on February 7, after the judicial recess. As Paciello announced, on this date they would already be presenting the contest schedule for the formation of the shortlist that will replace both ministers.
Zambonini will turn 75 on April 22. While Wapenka will be that age on May 14. According to court regulations, once those years are up, they must leave office to retire.
APPLICANTS
A series of names are handled as candidates to occupy both positions. It should be remembered that the opposition will dispute both quotas. One for the liberal party and the second for a third space party.
The strongest candidates to replace Ramírez Zambonini are the liberal senators; Juan Bartolomé “Ancho” Ramírez, Hermelinda Alvarenga and Fernando Silva Facetti. While to replace Wapenka appear Emilio Camacho, legal adviser of the Guasu Front and María Victoria Rivas, former candidate for senator of the Patria Querida party (she was in position 4 and only three agreed).

Hugo Richer, national senator for the Guasu Front, affirmed that the Senate will have the final decision on the election of the replacements. He said that it is a key position since the TSJE administers the country’s democracy.
“If there are two Colorados and one Liberal or vice versa, it will be very dangerous. The third space must occupy one of the vacancies. In the Senate, a political criterion prevails. We do support plurality as a fundamental requirement in representation of political diversity”, he said.
Richer pointed out that they are going to fight for the quota, as it is legitimate for the other opposition parties to fight for that place. “We haven’t talked about the candidates yet. It does not necessarily have to be from the Guasu Front, it can be another person that we defend because we have sufficient criteria. There is no need for him to be part of our party,” he commented.
APURIL
Gilberto “Tony” Apuril, national senator for Hagamos, expressed for his part that Hagamos would hardly fight for a place. Taking into account that they only have two legislators in the Senate.
“It is a very complicated issue and that depends on the votes. It is not something that is easily within the reach of our party,” he concluded.
