Two traffic accidents reported this Monday in Cuba left six dead; four of them due to an event of a massive nature that occurred in Guantanamo.
The first happened in the afternoon, at kilometer four of the National Highway, and occurred due to the overturning of a Transtur Yutong brand bus. He was the last of a caravan with integral general professors that was traveling to Havana according to details the local newspaper overcome.
The deceased were identified as Lisnellis Bruzan Chivas, 25 years old; Malvis Cordie Heredia, 52; Andrés Alnoldo López Hernandez, 28, and Marilyn Speck Wilson, 58. Three of them had a residence in the city of Guantanamo, although the majority were from the El Salvador municipality.
Of the injured, four underwent surgery at the Agostinho Neto Teaching General Hospital, in the provincial capital.
Eyewitnesses to the accident assured that there were no other vehicles involved in the accident whose causes are being investigated by the authorities, according to a report from efe.
At night, the official media CubaDebate reported another accident with fatal consequences. This happened on the Vía Blanca, in front of the Cookie Factory, in Havana.
The event in which a truck and a motorcycle are involved would have left two dead, a man and a woman who were presumably traveling on the motorcycle.
The day before, another tragedy left 12 injured on the highway access bridge that links Havana with the western province of Pinar del Río, according to local media reports.
In the final days of last year and at the beginning of 2023, there has been an increase in traffic accidents on the Island, several of them involving mass transport.
A recent report from the National Highway Commission (CNA) reported that between January and October 2022, 566 people had died while 6,175 were injured due to 8,187 traffic accidents.
At the end of October, the accident rate indicators on the Island showed an increasing trend in relation to 2019, 2020 and 2021, according to that evaluation.
The National Highway Commission points out that among the main causes of accidents on Cuban streets and highways is failure to control the vehicle, violating the right of way, lane invasion and speeding.
To this is added the increase in the circulation of mopeds, the deficient state of the country’s road network due to lack of maintenance, little road education and the presence of a fleet characterized by its age, with cars with more than 50 years.
