The first week of the publicist Stephen Valentine at the head of the campaign for the Yes in the face of the referendum on March 27 It was highly exposed.

Since last Friday, when the Political Table of the Broad Front endorsed his appointment by the Commission for the Yes, until this Friday 28, the communicator gave dozens of interviews in the mediapublicly polemicized through messages on his social networks and was the main protagonist of the political scene.

Along the way, his attitude garnered several angers on the leftfrom leaders of the Broad Front who raised objections to his participation in the campaign to union delegates who distanced themselves from having approached the publicist.

In the last hours, Valenti announced that he will stop giving interviews and that it will focus on the back room of the campaign and the strategy of the Yes supporters.

“This week I was in the press, but then everything went to publicity and communication,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

“He is not a spokesperson”

The decision to lower the profile comes after several statements by referents of the left who raised objections to the role of spokesperson that Valenti had taken in his first days as head of the campaign.

From the Communist Party -sector with more weight in the internal front- there were questions about his appointmentand representatives of the PIT-CNT in the Commission for the Yes warned that beyond Valenti’s abilities to plan the campaign strategy, it had not been agreed that he would acquire an “official spokesperson” role.

But even those leaders of the left who had brought about his appointment viewed with concern the high exposure that the publicist had in his first days at the head of the campaign, according to what they told The Observer various front lines.

This Friday, in turn, the president of the Ancap union Gerardo Rodríguez relativized having been responsible for Valenti’s approach and denied having transferred a proposal to him, as the publicist had narrated in one of his interviews this week.

In an interview with Viva la tarde (Radio Sarandí) earlier this week, Valenti stated: “There were quite a few people who mentioned me, wrote to me. (…) Until a colleague, the president of the Ancap Federation explicitly called me and told me: ‘If I propose this, are you willing? I thought about it, because it’s not easy, because it also included not having vacations after a terrible year, and I said: ‘Well, if you consider…’ And then I began to have meetings with political leaders, union leaders, from different organizations, with the ‘Yes’ committee.

Gerardo Rodríguez’s version, however, was different. “I did discuss in the spaces where I owed the orientation and shortcomings of the communication campaign, which in my opinion we should improve taking into account that the adversary has a propaganda apparatus of great power and this fight continues to be that of David with Goliath,” he wrote. the president of Fancap in a public letter.

The president of Ancap added that when Valenti publicly expressed “his criticism and his willingness to contribute”, he contacted him “to know their point of view (…) and open a space for listening and contributing.”

“This is what I transferred to some colleagues from the campaign command, obviously including my president (because my participation in the commission is on behalf of the PIT-CNT). The subsequent proposal was neither promoted nor transferred by me, who also does not act individually in the areas where I participate, ”he argued.
